About Us
We started this fundraiser because our son Ryan suffers from a Learning Disability that inhibits his ability to read and write. Sadly, Ryan’s needs were no longer met through traditional intervention programs. Classroom accommodations were no longer effective. Dissatisfied with Ryan's prognosis, we sought alternative and supplemental programs. We looked at various tutoring options but this seemed to be more of the same thing we were already doing. We finally found a program called the Arrowsmith Program that helps Ryan restructure his brain so that he is not only able to learn, but is able to retain the information he learns. Arrowsmith is not a cure for Learning Disabilities, but it offers more than simply coping strategies. The program enables Ryan to take in, store and use information effectively. Our son is now becoming an effective reader and he is gaining new skills and confidence every day.
Ryan is nearing the end of his first year back in a mainstream classroom and we couldn't be more proud of how much he has accomplished. While re-learning how to filter out the distractions often found in a classroom and adapting to the pace, Ryan has been able to successfully apply the new skills he acquired within the Arrowsmith program. In fact, he has resisted using some of the adaptive technology available to him because he can now write down his thoughts and read instructions! It's thrilling to see how far he has come. Ryan still has challenges with reading and writing but he can do both of these tasks with amazing proficiency. Ryan would never have come so far without the Arrowsmith program and the support of the teachers and staff at PCS. It is our pleasure to "pay it forward" and help support the program and future students through hosting an Amazing Race style Urban Adventure called Ryan’s Amazing Race for Learning. The Race raises funds to help support the Arrowsmith program and bring this alternative program to those who need it the most, while raising awareness about LDs and alternative therapies. We feel that ALL children have a right to be educated. Some just need to go about it a little differently than others.
